Anastasia 'Ana' Steele, a college undergraduate near Vancouver, agrees to interview corporate executive Christian Grey for the college newspaper after her roommate Kate falls ill. Christian shows a clear interest in Ana, arranging a photo shoot and later sending her first editions of Tess of the d'Urbervilles after learning of her love of literature. The pair begin dating, though an awkward night out ends with Ana waking in Christian's hotel room.
Christian asks Ana to sign a non-disclosure agreement and reveals his interest in a controlled bondage relationship, which Ana, despite being sexually naïve, agrees to explore. Christian showers Ana with gifts such as a new car and laptop, but their relationship is tested when Ana reveals she wants something more romantic than sexual and plans to visit her mother.
Back home, Christian continues to pursue further sexual experimentation while keeping Ana at an emotional distance, which upsets her. After a disturbing encounter that goes beyond her romantic expectations, Ana becomes convinced that Christian's desires are excessive, and the two part company outside his apartment.
